Take a listen to a few songs
Mare and the Colts is led by Portland-based songwriter Marilyn Darrell. Rooted in honky tonk, the music pairs Marilyn's original songs with electric guitar, some spicy accordion, and a full-band sound that lives somewhere between dancing and dying.
Born in Louisiana, Marilyn grew up in Nebraska and Northern California logging towns, and later spent years in Austin and South Texas. Her mom and dad were both long-haul truck drivers and much of her childhood was spent traveling with them across the country. Those places and miles still turn up in songs about leaving, work, love, regret, home, more work, memory, and starting over.
The songs draws inspiration from Texas songwriters, honky tonk, Cajun music, roots rock, and the South Texas accordion traditions she has studied. It's country music shaped by all the places she has lived and loved. Thanks for coming along for the ride.
